General information about Latvia

Latvia is the second largest of the Baltic States, bordering Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and the Russian Federation. With 531 km of coastline, stretching along the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga, Latvia is famous for its beautiful beaches and is home to the Baltic Riviera. It has a population of 2.3 million, of which 800,000 reside in the capital city of Riga.

Latvia has the highest percentage of Russian inhabitants of the Baltic States, currently 29.6%. Ethnic Latvians, however, dominate at 57.7% with the remaining 12.7% being made up of Belarusians, Ukranians, Polish, Lithuanian and other nationalities. Lutheran is the main religion of the ethnic Latvians, unsurprisingly followed by Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic.

After enjoying a brief period of independence between the two World Wars, Latvia was annexed by the USSR in 1944. Independence was re-established in 1991 and on 1st May 2004 it became one of the ten countries to join the European Union (EU). Latvia is a member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
