MELLUZI
Part of Jurmala, 29 km from Riga. The name is known since the 17th century - in 1693 the country estate "Melluzi" used to stand there. It is also possible that the name is due to the large amount of blackberries ("mellenes" in Latvian) growing in the local forests. The land belonged to the von Fircks family. In 1827 Karl von Fircks built a resort-house here, and the place was called Karlsbad II. Apart from the resort-house there was also a pub. The surrounding territory was occupied by fishermen's houses. In the second half of the 19th century an intensive building of summerhouses got started. Gardening, particularly growing of strawberries became popular. During World War II the resort-house burned down. In its place a park with a concert platform was formed. This was one of the first places in Latvia, where local amateur theatre performed in Latvian took place. In 1904 A.Alunans with his theatre gave performances there.
The old name "Melluzi" was restored in 1918.
Melluzhu prosp. 19. The Composer's home for creative work (1986). In November 1988 the foundation conference of the Jurmala branch of the People's front took place in that building.
MELLUZI AND OUTSTANDING PERSONALITIES
A number of well known Latvian men of culture were born in Melluzhi, such as the poet and founder of the Roerich society Richard Rudzitis (1898-1960), the oper singer Arturs Frinbergs, the painter and writer Uldis Zemzars, the poet Skaidrite Kaldupe.
